Where does a Jasper gift card get spent once the wrapping paper is gone? If it's Downtown Dollars, the answer is local downtown businesses, because the card is good only for approved charges there. Those are the same few blocks where the tree gets lit, the parade rolls and Santa leads a sing-along. Jasper Main Street lists the holiday events on its calendar and promotes the card on the same home page. The events bring people onto 19th Street and 5th Avenue from late November through mid-December, and the card brings them back after the holidays.
One calendar and one card
The Jasper Main Street home page puts its event listings right next to a pitch for Downtown Dollars. It calls the card a gift for birthdays, holidays, employee appreciation and graduations, one that helps "keep local dollars working in Downtown Jasper."
The card works like a regular credit card. It's a Jasper Main Street Mastercard sold through Giverrang. You can get an e-gift card that arrives by email and can be printed as a voucher, or a physical card with a magnetic stripe. According to Giverrang, merchants ring it up on their usual point-of-sale system, the same way they take any other credit or debit card. A shop owner doesn't need new equipment to take it, and the person you give it to doesn't need a special app to spend it.
What makes the card local is the list of places that accept it.
Who takes Downtown Dollars
The Giverrang page lists participating businesses by category. Here are the ones listed for downtown Jasper, grouped the way you might use them when filling a stocking or planning a night out.
| What you're after | Listed businesses |
|---|---|
| Coffee, sweets and treats | Sweet Ruth's Coffee, Lick The Bowl Baked Goods, The Pie Factory, The Pink Cone |
| A sit-down meal | Crawfish Warehouse, Warehouse 319, JJ's Cafe, Los Reyes Grill, Rock N' Roll Sushi, Johnny Brusco's, Alabama Stackers, Main Street Market |
| Clothing and boutiques | Boutique Tallulah, Bernard's Store for Men, Carol's Boutique, Gibson Girl Boutique, Ellie B's Boutique, Marlee Jane's Boutique, Lavish Boutique, J&T Apparel, Shmic & Boo's Boutique, Deb & Co., Dazzle Dance Boutique |
| Home, gifts and art | Tallulah Home, Sycamore Grove Designs, June Bug Pottery, The Leaf & Petal, Sherrie Pike Collective |
| Jewelry and practical gifts | Young Jewelers, Andrew Posey & Son's Hardware |
The variety makes the card easy to give. A teenager can spend it at The Pink Cone, a grandparent can spend it at Andrew Posey & Son's Hardware, and a couple can spend it on supper at Warehouse 319. The list also overlaps with the events. When Jasper Main Street held Christmas on Main last December, the Walker Leader reported that the vendors included Boutique Tallulah, Main Street Market, The Pink Cone, Grit and Grace, Deb's on Fifth and Paper Places. At least three of those names are also on today's Downtown Dollars list, so some of the businesses at the holiday events are the same ones that take the card.
Monday, November 30: the tree lighting
The season starts with Festival of Lights & Christmas on Main, which Jasper Main Street lists as a tree lighting from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 30. That's a weeknight, and the two-hour window starts around the time many people leave work. Supper at one of the restaurants above can come before or after the lights.
Tuesday, December 1: the Walker County Christmas Parade
The next evening, the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County holds its parade downtown. The Daily Mountain Eagle reports that the parade starts at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1. Entries can begin lining up at 4 p.m., and the deadline to enter is November 27 at 3 p.m. The paper reports that the Chamber will announce pre-parade activities and show times later. Jasper Main Street lists the parade from 6 to 8 p.m., and the city's September 8 council agenda shows the Chamber's permit request for the same date.
The tree lighting and the parade fall on back-to-back nights. A family that skips Monday can still catch Tuesday, and the businesses on the card list get two evenings of crowds in a row instead of one.
Thursday, December 3: an evening at the White House on Fifth
Two nights after the parade, the holiday events move a few blocks over to 5th Avenue South. On the September 8, 2026 Jasper City Council agenda, the White House on Fifth Museum & Gallery requested a holiday event for December 3 from 5 to 11 p.m. at 1508 5th Ave. S. The request included closing 5th Avenue South between 15th and 16th streets.
If you've never been inside, the house itself is worth the trip. The museum's own site describes it as a 5,000-square-foot historic home turned into a community cultural center, museum and gallery. Terri Drummond Lyon gave the home, and the Walker Area Community Foundation manages it. When it opened, the Daily Mountain Eagle identified it as the historic Phillips Home, built in the early 1900s by Jasper businessman Jefferson "Jake" Phillips. The paper also noted that a 1981 local-history book described it as a 1907 Greek Revival home.
The December 3 hours stand out because the museum normally keeps daytime hours. It's open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed for lunch from noon to 1, and open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month. An event that runs until 11 p.m. lets people with day jobs see the house on a weeknight.
December 12 and 13: the Holly Jolly Trolley
The last of the four holiday events falls on a weekend. The Holly Jolly Trolley is listed as a "Christmas Sing-Along with Santa," running from 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, through 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 13. The listing's location is Downtown Jasper, 219 19th Street West.
Two things make this weekend useful for spending the card. It's the only daytime event of the four, so the shops are open while it's going on. And it falls about two weeks before Christmas, which is about when gift lists get serious. A Downtown Dollars card bought early in the season can come back to 19th Street that weekend and pay for a pie from The Pie Factory or a scarf from Gibson Girl Boutique.
Using the card around the calendar
The events and the card work best together if you think of the card as a reason to come back after the event, not just a present. Here's one way to line them up:
- Before November 30: buy Downtown Dollars as an e-gift card or a physical card through the Giverrang page for downtown Jasper, so it's ready for the people on your list.
- The tree lighting and the parade: plan supper downtown on Monday or Tuesday at one of the restaurants that take the card, such as JJ's Cafe, Los Reyes Grill or Crawfish Warehouse.
- December 3: go to the White House on Fifth event for the evening, and keep in mind that the museum asked to close 5th Avenue South between 15th and 16th streets for it.
- December 12 or 13: take care of the rest of your shopping during the Holly Jolly Trolley weekend, starting with coffee at Sweet Ruth's Coffee.
- After Christmas: whoever got the card brings it back downtown in January.
The fifth step is what connects everything. The events last about two weeks, but a card given on Christmas morning gets spent later, at a boutique on a slow weekday or at Main Street Market some Saturday in the new year.
